Programme Overview
This module is designed for students to develop a comprehensive understanding of research in general and business. Both academic business research and business consultancy research are addressed in the module.
The module examines the concepts and theories underlying research, as well as the practice of research. The module has an applied focus. The readings and assignments are designed to identify a feasible research topic and develop a research proposal for academic business or business consultancy research. How research problems and questions may be identified, and the process of achieving thoughtful, effective and efficient research design are examined. The importance of the literature review and how it can be carried out for optimal effectiveness in research are investigated.
In addition, the module provides an overview of research methodologies and methods and the techniques of the research process as applied to business, whether as a business consultant or as an academic researcher. The philosophical and epistemological assumptions underpinning the research approaches and methodologies, as well as their role in determining the design and implementation of the research, are studied. Besides these aspects, the ethical aspects of research and consultancy are also addressed.

This module equips you with a thorough understanding of the advantages and challenges presented by workplace diversity, suggesting techniques to manage effectively and maximise the benefits of diversity. You will be guided through a comprehensive understanding of effectively managing diversity on the basis of race, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, religion, age, ability, national origin, and intersectionality in organisations and about issues various groups face, including discrimination.
In addition, you will analyse data in ways that facilitate the development and evaluation of human resource (HR) policies, practices, and strategies. It is critical for managers to understand the human resource management practices that facilitate employee engagement as well as how to conduct a competent workforce survey and use the data to assess and maintain/improve employee engagement.

Examine how individuals learn and develop in the context of work and organisations. Apply theories of learning and skill development to inform your understanding of how people learn. The theories of occupational choice will frame how this is applied throughout the course of a career. The psychological underpinnings of activities such as training and coaching will be examined, with an emphasis on evaluation of interventions. Finally learn how to apply theory into practice through effective coaching techniques based in theory.

During this course, you will learn about the critical financial fundamentals necessary for managing an organisation’s operational activities and achieving its strategic goals. You will learn about the time value of money, investing in various instruments, making critical decisions regarding capital expenditures, and various methods for successfully capitalising the firm. Managing critical cash flows and allocation of financial assets are also discussed in detail from a managerial perspective.

During this module, students will learn the skills and characteristics of an effective leader. Students will learn how to apply leadership skills during change and in multicultural and diverse environments. The common thread throughout the course will be leading with strong managerial ethics, emotional intelligence, and reflective leadership. The course will also examine the relationship between contemporary leadership issues and classical leadership theory.

This module draws from multiple disciplines to examine the complex relationship between human labour and human flourishing. Topics include the history and evolution of work; the future of work; the measurement of well-being at work and in life; the modern employee engagement crisis; similarities and differences across countries and work contexts; the role of individuals, managers, organisations, and policy-makers in improving well-being outcomes; and the role of individuals in managing their own work and careers in pursuit of the good life.

You will study organisational change, including the concept of planning change, the basic roles and styles of the change manager, and resistance to organisational change and how to overcome it. All aspects of dealing with the people aspects of organisational change from the perspective of a change leader or consultant are discussed in this course. Topics cover personal change, models and frameworks for change, methods for changing corporate culture and mindsets, approaches to strategy execution, and techniques for implementing new organisational designs and technologies.

This module is designed to assist managers and entrepreneurs to enhance an organisation’s performance by adopting a strategic approach to the management of its human resources. The overall module aim is to equip you with the knowledge and skills necessary to align individual and team-based activities with the organisation’s mission and vision and to thus optimise the contribution made by the workforce to the achievement of its long-term ambitions. The module takes a balanced approach to the study of strategic human resource management by synthesising a combination of academic theory and practitioner experiences, drawn from a broad range of operating environments. As such, you will be able to review and evaluate the organisation’s current operating environment; develop frameworks to diagnose workforce-related problems and propose solutions; and anticipate and prepare for uncertain organisational challenges.

Students will examine all elements of talent management including elements of human capital strategy: employee selection, retention, performance management as well as compensation and succession planning. Learn how to survey the core elements of talent management and how to develop and implement effective talent management systems within your organisation.
